Called the Birney Safety Car (after its designer), and designed c.1915.
An amazing find.
This design was supposed to save the electric streetcar industry, and it was smaller, lighter and less powerful, with the intention of using less electricity so that there could be a greater frequency of service. It turned out that the ride was very uncomfortable and the cars were very slow and jerky.
Riders called these much hated cars "cornpoppers." Some lasted in service until the 1950s, outlasting more modern equipment....
